We have helped the
Vänge regional historical society
to produce a book. This book has more than 170
pictures and about 380 pages. It was typeset with pdflatex and the
LaTeX document class "book". The texts were in many cases scanned
from the articles in the yearly publication Vi i Vänge from
the years 1991-2004 and we used Optical Text Recognition (OCR).
These texts were modified by the authors and
delivered as Word files. These files were converted to plain text
suitable for LaTeX markup by the marvelous free program antiword. The
pictures are scanned or taken with a digital camera and prepared for
inclusion in the texfile with the help of the free program Gimp.
Everything was done on a pc running linux and TeXLive.
Here are some extracts from the pdf-file sent to the printers. Some files may be rather large as they contain high resolution pictures. |
|
frontmatter | Preliminaries | runstenar | A description of the rune stones in Vänge written by the painter Carin Ax |
fajansfiske | How some earthenware made at the original Gustafsberg factory was found in lake Bredsjön |
blomsterkungen | About the man from Vänge known as the ''Flower King'' |
Vängekören | Some reminiscenses from the Vänge Choir |
The book cover was also made with LaTeX. Here we used the "picture"-environment to place text and pictures on the page | |

Our second book has a larger format and
is typeset in two columns. It tells the story of the iron works at
Hörnsjöfors Bruk och Västerfärnebo,
has about 400 pages and around 100 pictures. It was also produced
with the help of TeXLive and linux. There were some complications.
Two different indexes should be included, one with people and one
with places. The package index makes this possible. However,
some places to be indexed were inside "verbatim"-text. Hence the
places-index had to be the default index. Then I could put TeX-code
inside the verbatim-text by using the package fancyvrb. This
package turned out to be very useful. It enabled me to define several
CustomVerbatimEnvironments to handle poems, documents in old
style and other variations that had to go into the book.
Here are some excerpts from the pdf-file sent to the printers. Some files may be rather large as they contain high resolution pictures. |

Our third book,
Brukskamrerns Wirsbo is in
the same two-column format as the Hörnsjöfors-book. It has around 335
pages and more than 170 pictures, several
of which are now bleed positioned. This was done with the
trim-flag in the \includegraphics-command. We tricked LaTeX
into thinking that the size of the picture was different from the
actual size. The book also has two indexes. The picture index was
done simply with the index-package and the program xindy. The people
index was more complicated. This was because xindy did not
support See also-entries but only See-entries. A
separate editing of the people-index was necessary before the
production of the final pdf-file. The book-cover was done this time
with the new XeLaTeX. This enabled the use of fonts that are
otherwise not easily available in LaTeX. This worked perfectly.
Here you can see some excerpts from the book taken from the pdf-file that was sent to the printers. Some of the examples may be very large as they contain high-resolution pictures. |

Ars Longa is written by Teddy Brunius. This is the first time we use
LaTeX to typeset poems. For this we used the package verse.
This also took care of the numbering of the lines in the stanzas. In
order to use some nice fonts we did the typesetting with XeLaTeX.
This worked perfectly.
Here are some excerpts from the book, taken from the pdf-file that was used for printing. Some examples that contain high resolution pictures can be quite large. |

Gåtor och Behag is a diskussion of some interesting problems in
Swedish Literature and solutions proposed by prof Teddy Brunius. The
book was typeset using the same layout as Ars Longa and again with
XeLaTeX. We also tested using dropcaps in the chapters. Everything
worked perfectly.

The book Principles of Deductive Theoretical Physics,
written by Tomas Blomberg, was typeset using luaLaTeX. A template
from Lambert Academic Publishing was used, which demanded 14pt text
on A4-pages. This was photographed and reduced to the actual page
size in the book. The book cover, title page and some other pages in
the book frontmatter was done by Lambert Publishing.
Here are some excerpts from the book, taken from the pdf-file that was used for printing. Some examples that contain high resolution pictures can be quite large. |

SCAN 2016 Book of Abstracts, contains presentations of the
talks given at the conference 2016. These abstracts were prepared by
the authors themselves following a template provided by the
organizers. They were sent as pdf-files and were included in the
Book of Abstracts using the package pdfpages. An
introduction, a preface and an author index were added. New
pagination had to be done.
Here you can see some extracts from the book that was sent to the printers. |
